Club coaches at 2017 Asian Winter Games

Hokkaido Ski Club had the honour of coaching the Jordan alpine ski race team in the 2017 Asian Winter Games. Held at Sapporo Teine Ski Resort in Sapporo, Japan from 19-26 February this year, 32 member nations participated including Japan, China and Australia. The Games featured winter sport events such as skiing, snowboarding, figure skating and ice hockey.

Club coaches, Slaven Badura and Miha Grilj, trained Suhail Azzam and Sara Sukhtian who competed in the Men’s Giant Slalom and Slalom, and Women’s Giant Slalom events respectively. Participating in their first-ever international race competition, both Suhail and Sara completed all races successfully. They achieved excellent results on the challenging courses that many other competitors failed to finish.

Huge effort and commitment was shown from Slaven and Miha who worked tirelessly over the course of the Games. They not only trained Suhail and Sara in the technical side of racing but managed all aspects of pre-race preparation and race days. A lot of work and long hours were involved behind-the-scenes for each and every race. From maintaining the ski equipment to organising how each day would run, they covered all areas. This allowed competitors to go into the race fully focused on nothing but the course and the finish line.

Hokkaido Ski Club will continue working together with the Jordan Olympic Committee to grow Jordan’s participation in winter sports. With the great performance at the Asian Winter Games, watch our space as we look to coaching Jordan for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. #olympics2018
